"Rose of Cimarron" is the title song of Poco's 1976 album on ABC, and it very nearly went to a singing cowboy instead. Founding member Rusty Young wrote it that year when his friend Stuart Margolin, an actor with ambitions as a record producer, asked him for a cowboy song for a comeback album he hoped to make with Roy Rogers. Young reached back to a brochure he'd stumbled on in Oklahoma during Poco's 1973 tour, about the frontier legend Rose Dunn, the Rose of Cimarron, who at 15 fell in with the outlaw George Newcomb and became his accomplice.

The Rogers album never happened. Paul Cotton and Timothy B. Schmit heard the song, wanted it for Poco, and wound up sharing the lead vocal on a warm country-rock yarn that suits them both.
