"I Want to Be Buried in Your Backyard" comes off Nightmare of You's self-titled 2005 debut, made by the band Brandon Reilly started a month after the Movielife broke up in September 2003, with his sights set on something poppier. Reilly wrote it alone and sings it, trading guitars with Joe McCaffrey while Joel Shearer adds acoustic guitar, Sammy Siegler drums and producer Jason Lader engineers and plays bass himself. Chantal Kreviazuk turns up on backing vocals, and Greg Collins mixed it.
By the time they made the album, bassist Phil Navetta, another Movielife alumnus, had quit, and the three-piece flew to Los Angeles, trimmed a pile of 25 songs down to 16 and put in 10 days of pre-production. The result here is bright, hook-first pop with a morbid streak running right through the title.
