"Holland, 1945" was the one and only single from In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Neutral Milk Hotel's second album and, as it turned out, their last, which Merge put out in 1998. Jeff Mangum wrote it, and his Elephant 6 comrade Robert Schneider produced it at Pet Sounds Studio in Denver in July 1997.
It's the album's great headlong rush, a fuzz-caked, full-tilt gallop with Mangum hollering over the top as if he might never get another chance to say any of it. The single itself surfaced on October 13, 1998, through Blue Rose, Orange Twin and Neutral Milk Hotel Records, and the critics took to it warmly.
