"The Sun Hasn't Left" was one of three songs Modest Mouse floated ahead of The Golden Casket, their seventh studio album, which landed on Epic in June 2021. Isaac Brock treats it like a toy chest: drum machine, marimba, synthesizer, guitar and bass all carry his name, while Russell Higbee piles on electric guitar, bass and more synth, Jordan Katz adds horn and Ben Massarella works the shakers.
Producers Jacknife Lee and Dave Sardy don't stay behind the glass. Both play and sing on it, Lee mixes it as well, and Lisa Molinaro joins the vocal pile-up. The result is warm, busy and a little sun-dazed. The writing credit is split five ways, and one name on it is Jeremiah Green, the founding drummer who pounds the kit here; the album turned out to be his last, as he died in 2022.
