“All I Need Is A Miracle” by Mike + The Mechanics

"All I Need Is a Miracle" dates back to 1985, when it appeared on the self-titled debut from Mike + The Mechanics, and it also turns up on the band's 2019 album Out of the Blue. Guitarist Mike Rutherford wrote it with producer Christopher Neil, and Paul Young sang it, both on the original and on the 1996 re-recording made for the Hits compilation.

Rutherford saw it as an outlier for him: a happy song, or mostly one, upbeat in a way he rarely allowed himself, not quite optimistic but pointed at life in a positive way. It is soft rock with a spring in its step, and it found its audience when it went out as a US single early in 1986, climbing to 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. In Ireland it went all the way to number one.
