Karen Carpenter had first refusal on Rod Temperton's "Rock with You" while she worked on her first solo album, and she passed, so it ended up with Michael Jackson on Off the Wall, his fifth solo album, in 1979. Temperton wrote and arranged it, Quincy Jones produced, and Bruce Swedien recorded and mixed it, with Jackson singing lead and stacking his own backing vocals.

It's disco-funk silk: John "JR" Robinson on drums, Marlo Henderson and David Williams on electric guitar, David "Hawk" Wolinski on Rhodes, Greg Phillinganes and Michael Boddicker on synthesizer, plus horns and flutes from Jerry Hey, Gary Grant, Bill Reichenbach Jr., Kim Hutchcroft and Larry Williams. The album's second single, it topped both the pop and R&B charts in America early in 1980, and it's reckoned one of disco's final hits.
