"Atlas, Rise!" was the third single from Hardwired... to Self-Destruct, Metallica's tenth studio album, and it came out on October 31, 2016 with a Halloween stunt to match: participating record stores handed out free Hardwired Halloween masks carrying a download code that let fans hear it 30 minutes before everyone else.
James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich wrote it and co-produced it with Greg Fidelman, who also recorded and mixed it. Hetfield sings and shares electric guitar duty with Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo plays bass and Ulrich drums, and the result is thrash with the throttle wide open. The band played it live for the first time the next day, November 1, in Bogotá, Colombia, and it went on to a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song.
