“This Is Us” by Mark Knopfler And Emmylou Harris appears on 8 radio countdowns from 2 stations between 2009 and 2024. Its best result is #96 on the WYEP 913 Songs That Matter from the Last Decade. In the combined RockLists rankings it is #1,676 indie & aaa song of all time.
Mark Knopfler wrote "This Is Us" and sang it as a duet with Emmylou Harris, and it became the first single from All the Roadrunning, the album the pair released together in 2006. It went out as a promo CD single, just as the title song had, although that earlier track had really been working on behalf of the compilation Private Investigations before it lent its name to the duet record.
There's no grandstanding in it, just two voices settling in beside each other and letting the song carry itself, and adult alternative radio responded, lifting it to No. 5 on Billboard's Adult Alternative Airplay chart. One station's listeners have held on to it in their countdowns for years since.
