"Time (You and I)" comes from Mordechai, the third album by the American trio Khruangbin, released in June 2020 on Dead Oceans and Night Time Stories. Laura Lee plays electric bass, Donald Johnson, Jr. drums and Rhodes piano, and Mark Speer electric guitar and synthesizer; all three sing and clap, and Lee and Speer wrote the words. Then the percussion piles up: Speer adds triangle, cowbell, vibraslap, tambourine, agogô and congas, Charlie Perez brings congas, bongos, timbales, shakers and cuíca, and John Adams plays rototom. Will Van Horn plays pedal steel, Cleo "Pookie" Sample Minimoog, and Steve Christensen recorded, mixed and co-produced it with the band.
Slant's Sophia Ordaz heard Mordechai as the album where Khruangbin came into their own, lyrics maturing and far-flung influences fused tighter, where earlier records had risked sounding like careful homage to Thai and Iranian rock.
