"Righteous" arrived at midnight on April 24, 2020, a few hours after Juice Wrld's family announced it, and it was the first single to carry the late rapper's name as lead artist since his death. Grade A Productions put it out through an exclusive licence with Interscope, and it went on to lead off his posthumous album, Legends Never Die.
It's a pensive, woozy thing. Stereogum heard a melancholy swoon built on arpeggiated guitar and moony melodies, all soft edges and breathy vocals, and Rolling Stone read it as a song about anxiety and trying to numb it by self-medicating, while knowing full well how that cycle of addiction goes. Death hangs over the lyrics too. Nick Mira is credited as composer.
