“Joy To You Baby” by Josh Ritter

"Joy to You Baby" comes from The Beast in Its Tracks, Josh Ritter's seventh album, released in 2013 after a long, hard stretch. Ritter spent 18 months writing and recording the record and threw out much of what came first, songs from the angry, manic months after his life came apart that he later judged forced.

He made the keeper version at the Great North Sound Society in Maine with producer Sam Kassirer, a collaborator since The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter and the keyboard player in his Royal City Band. Kassirer plays keys here too, with Josh Kaufman on double bass and guitar and Liam Hurley on drums, and Ritter wrote the song on his own.
