John Prine wrote "Ain't Hurtin' Nobody" by himself, which sets it apart on Lost Dogs + Mixed Blessings, his 12th studio album, released in 1995, where several songs were co-written with the Nashville veteran Gary Nicholson. Howie Epstein, bass player in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, produced the record, as he had Prine's Grammy-winning 1991 comeback The Missing Years, and they made it much the same way, in Los Angeles and at Epstein's own house in North Hollywood, with many of the same players.

Prine had no interest in a sequel, though. He told the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel that dressing songs up with horns does no good if the songs themselves aren't there, and he conceded that the two of them had worn each other out on this one, the end of their run together. John Callahan did the cover art.
