"You're the Voice" was John Farnham's big moment in 1986, issued as a single that September ahead of his album Whispering Jack. Andy Qunta, Keith Reid, Maggie Ryder and Chris Thompson wrote it, and Farnham sings it like a man who knows the song belongs to a stadium. It was an immediate hit at home in Australia and in several European countries, Britain and Ireland among them.
It never really went away. A TV advert sent it back up the Australian charts in 2012, and in September 2023 it soundtracked a video for the "Yes" campaign in Australia's Indigenous Voice referendum, a campaign that ultimately lost.
