Haim released "Summer Girl" at the end of July 2019, and Annie Mac premiered it as her Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1. Danielle Haim has said it began as a GarageBand demo on her phone, and that the words grew out of a hard stretch: her partner at the time, producer Ariel Rechtshaid, was diagnosed with cancer while the band were making their second album, Something to Tell You, and she wanted to be the bright spot in his dark days.
Her friend Rostam Batmanglij wrote a saxophone part lifted from Blodwyn Pig's 1969 song "Sing Me a Song That I Know." Once they caught an echo of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" in the melody, he leaned into it with bass effects that echo that record, earning Reed a writing credit. The result is a lazy, sun-warmed stroll with a lump in its throat.
