Girl in Red, the recording name of Norwegian songwriter Marie Ulven, put out "Serotonin" in March 2021 as an advance look at her debut album, if i could make it go quiet, and it's the sound of an indie confessor deciding the room had gotten too small. Ulven produced it with Finneas and Matias Tellez, and she framed the song as a way of facing down self-destructive urges and a battered mind, painted on a wider canvas.
The video leans all the way in: home-movie footage, Ulven running through fields and cruising the highway trailing red balloons, then a surreal flight past a sunrise, Egyptian pyramids and the stock Windows XP desktop wallpaper. That May she brought it to American television for the first time, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
