On Apostrophe ('), his April 1974 album for DiscReet, Frank Zappa aimed "Cosmik Debris" at the mystic-hustler racket. He wrote, arranged and produced it, sang lead and played the electric guitar, so every sneer on it is his own. A Mystery Man, a guru type with a crystal ball, offers to guide the narrator to nirvana for a fee; the narrator won't bite, and when the huckster leans on him he turns the tables, hypnotizing the guru, swiping the crystal ball and the rest of his stuff, and blowing the con man's mind.
It was a favorite on Dr. Demento's show in the '70s, backed the "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" single, and became a concert showcase for Zappa's guitar solos alongside George Duke's keyboards and Napoleon Murphy Brock's sax. The late-2010 Zappa Plays Zappa tour brought him back on a video screen to sing and solo it over the live band.
