"Wake Me Up" was the opening shot from Life Is Yours, the seventh studio album by British band Foals, landing on 4 November 2021 as its first single. It's funk rock with a dance-punk twitch, and its roots go back further than you'd think. Guitarist Jimmy Smith told Triple J the idea dated from before the Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost sessions, though it was only pulled into shape over the winter of 2020 into 2021, and the words were finished while Britain sat through the first big wave of COVID-19.
Singer Yannis Philippakis told Consequence of Sound it grew out of lockdown daydreams: picturing life snapping back to normal, a cartoonish spring bursting out after a bleak stretch, summer on its way and people finally allowed back together.
