“Someone Saved My Life Tonight” by Elton John

"Someone Saved My Life Tonight" was the only single pulled from Elton John's 1975 album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, and like the rest of that autobiographical record it digs into his own past, here an attempted suicide. Bernie Taupin wrote the words, Elton the music, and Gus Dudgeon produced.

At six minutes and 45 seconds it ran twice the length of a normal single, and Elton refused to let it be cut down because the lyric was too personal. It climbed to No. 4 on the Hot 100 anyway. His piano, Rhodes and string synthesizer build a slow, cathedral-sized ache, with Davey Johnstone's guitars, Dee Murray's bass, Nigel Olsson's drums and Ray Cooper's percussion behind him. It was the last Elton single with that original band for eight years: he fired Murray and Olsson once the album was done.
