"B.O.T.A. (Baddest of Them All)" started small. British DJs Eliza Rose and Interplanetary Criminal first put it out on 15 June 2022 as a download and a limited dubplate on Rose's own label, Rosebud Recordings. Then came the Glastonbury DJ sets, then TikTok, and by 12 August Warner Records had it out on a licensing deal.
Rose wrote and performs it, and the pair produced a house track built around a sample of Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam's 1991 "Let the Beat Hit 'Em", pure summer-night euphoria with a wink back at the old school. It spent two weeks on top of the UK Singles Chart, the chart's 1,400th number one and the first by a female DJ since Sonique's "It Feels So Good", and topped the Irish chart too. NME, Pitchfork and The Guardian put it on their year-end lists.
