"Sweet Talkin' Woman" was pulled from ELO's 1977 album Out of the Blue and put out on Jet as a single in 1978, and it started life under another name. It was "Dead End Street" until the title changed during recording, and a trace of the old words still survives in the third verse.

Jeff Lynne wrote it, sings lead, plays guitar and synthesizer and produced it; Richard Tandy is on keyboards, Kelly Groucutt bass, Bev Bevan drums and percussion and Mik Kaminski violin, and Lynne, Tandy and Louis Clark share the arranging credit. It gave the album its third top ten hit in Britain, where it peaked at number 6, and reached 17 on the Hot 100 in a US mix that ran a touch faster and 10 seconds shorter. The first pressings, 7-inch and 12-inch alike, came on see-through purple vinyl.
