"The Chaconne" comes from A Badly Broken Code, the debut album Dessa released through Doomtree Records in 2010. She wrote it, Paper Tiger produced it, and Joe Mabbott mixed it.
Dessa came to the record as a member of Doomtree, the Minneapolis indie hip hop collective, and she took the album's title from a line in "Nostalgia", a poem by Billy Collins. The reviews were strong: Tiny Mix Tapes gave it four stars out of five, the A.V. Club put it 20th among the year's best albums, and City Pages called it the best local album of the previous 12 months. Another track, "The Bullpen", found an unexpected second life when Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar used it to bring her onstage at rallies during her 2020 presidential primary campaign.
