"The Subway" is the 2025 single Chappell Roan held back for a year, playing it on stage from mid-2024 while doubting a studio take could match it live. When it finally arrived through Island, written and produced with Dan Nigro, it was worth the wait: a breakup ballad that moves between dream pop and power pop, with jangle pop and shoegaze in its bloodstream.
It's about heartbreak and slowly healing, a close cousin to her 2022 single "Casual", and the video, shot in New York, has Roan chasing a lover who is walking out on her. It debuted at number three on the Hot 100, her highest US placing yet, topped the UK chart, and earned Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
