"Longshot" was the Welsh band Catfish and the Bottlemen's opening move for The Balance, their third album, landing through Island Records in January 2019 as the record's lead single. Van McCann wrote it and sings it, and it keeps the band's formula tight and unfussy: McCann and Johnny Bond on guitars, Benji Blakeway on bass and Bob Hall on drums, all pushing in one direction.
Jacknife Lee produced it and Craig Silvey mixed it, giving the band's guitar-rock earnestness a bit of polish without sanding off the urgency.
