"Hard Way Home" comes from Bear Creek, Brandi Carlile's fourth studio album, released on Columbia in June 2012 and named for the Bear Creek Studio where most of it was recorded. Carlile wrote it with Tim Hanseroth, and nearly everyone on it plays more than one part: Carlile sings lead and plays guitar, piano and organ, Phil Hanseroth handles bass and percussion, Tim Hanseroth plays banjo, guitar, ukulele and percussion, both Hanseroths sing backup, all three clap along, and Allison Miller adds more percussion.
The three of them co-produced it with Trina Shoemaker, the Grammy winner who also engineered and mixed it. The album entered the Billboard 200 at number ten, the first top ten of Carlile's career.
