Aimee Mann opened her solo account in 1993 with "I Should've Known", the first single from her debut album Whatever, and she wrote every word and note of it herself. Jon Brion produced, and he also played half the band: drums, bass, electric guitar, organ, mellotron and chamberlin. Mann handled bass and electric guitar too, Todd Nelson added more guitar, and Buddy Judge joined Brion and Mann on vocals.
American alternative stations gave it spins and it reached 16 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, but the sales never followed at home. Britain was kinder: steady BBC play took it to 55 on the singles chart, and a 1994 reissue climbed to 45. Katherine Dieckmann directed the video in March 1993, in and around an empty house near Ithaca, New York.
