Scaled and Icy by Twenty One Pilots
Scaled and Icy is an album by Twenty One Pilots, released in 2021. 3 songs from it have charted on rock radio countdowns, with 14 countdown appearances in total. The biggest is “Shy Away”, on 5 lists with a best position of #2.
Scaled and Icy, the sixth studio album from Columbus, Ohio duo Twenty One Pilots, came out on May 21, 2021, through Fueled by Ramen and Elektra, with Tyler Joseph producing. The title is a play on "scaled back and isolated", Joseph's shorthand for the music of the pandemic, and it's also an anagram of "Clancy is dead", a wink at the protagonist of their previous album, Trench.
The sound is bright, bouncy synth-pop and electropop, with Josh Dun's drums snapping underneath Joseph's sugar-rush hooks and a sly unease tucked behind the shine. "Shy Away" bursts out of the gate, "Saturday" struts, and "The Outside" was the fourth and final single. Reviews were generally positive, and a livestream edition with extra live tracks followed in November 2021.
