Don't Waste Your Anger, the fifth studio album from Melbourne punks the Smith Street Band, came out through Pool House Records on 17 April 2020, pulled forward from its June date once COVID-19 lockdowns left nobody sure when the band would tour again. It became their first album to top the ARIA chart.
Bassist Michael Fitzgerald recorded and mixed it himself at the band's own Bush House Studios in regional Victoria, and it has a homemade intimacy for all its noise. Wil Wagner leads with his raw, cracking voice and guitar, while Lee Hartney chased the sound of Jeff Russell of Signals Midwest, reaching for flanger pedals and pick slides and stretching himself as a player. Jess Locke and Lucy Wilson fill out the guitars and backing vocals. With the stages shut, Wagner promoted it with an acoustic set streamed on the band's Facebook, plus a live Q&A with his bandmates.
