Mechanical Resonance, Tesla's debut album, rolled out on Geffen on December 8, 1986, from a Sacramento outfit that had only just found its name. Brian Wheat and Frank Hannon had started out as City Kidd, and they switched to Tesla shortly before cutting this record because another band already had a name too close for comfort. By then the classic lineup was in place: Jeff Keith's raspy howl up front, Hannon and Tommy Skeoch trading guitars, Wheat on bass and Troy Luccketta on drums.

It landed right in the middle of the hair metal boom, but this is grittier, bluesier hard rock with the denim still on. "Modern Day Cowboy" and a cover of Ph.D.'s "Little Suzi" were the hits, the album peaked at 32 on the Billboard 200 in April 1987, and it went platinum in 1989.
