Mezmerize by System of a Down
Mezmerize is an album by System of a Down, released in 2005. 6 songs from it have charted on rock radio countdowns, with 57 countdown appearances in total. The biggest is “B.Y.O.B.”, on 33 lists and voted number one once.
Mezmerize, System of a Down's fourth album, came out on American Recordings on May 17, 2005, with its companion Hypnotize following later that year. Rick Rubin produced it, and it's the Armenian-American quartet at their most gleefully unhinged.
Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian trade vocals like a split personality arguing with itself, Malakian's guitar lurching from twisting melody to crushing riffs in a heartbeat, with Shavo Odadjian's bass and John Dolmayan's drums keeping the circus upright. "B.Y.O.B." carries an anti-war message on a whiplash riff and won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance, "Question!" is a winding, eerie epic, and "Radio/Video", "Cigaro" and "Lost in Hollywood" swing from absurd to heartbroken. Critics loved it, it sold over 450,000 copies in its first week and went straight to number one on the Billboard 200.
