Ice Hockey Hair EP by Super Furry Animals

Ice Hockey Hair, Super Furry Animals' 1998 EP on Creation, rounds up four songs the band felt didn't belong on Radiator or on its follow-up, Guerrilla, and it's a glorious orphanage. The title track is named after another word for the mullet, and it's a woozy, sprawling, big-hearted singalong that shows the Cardiff band at their most generous: Gruff Rhys singing, Huw Bunford on lead guitar, Guto Pryce on bass, Cian Ciaran on keyboards and electronics, Dafydd Ieuan on drums.

The opener, "Smokin'", was written to order for a Channel 4 programme about sloth presented by Howard Marks, and turned up again that year on the rarities set Out Spaced. The NME made the EP its single of the week and then ranked it second in its Single of the Year list for 1998, and Melody Maker and Select both put it in their year-end lists too. Daf Palfrey directed the video for the title track and Peter Gray the one for "Smokin'".
