Arias & Symphonies, the second album from Burlington, Ontario's Spoons, came out on Ready Records in October 1982, and it's Canadian new wave dressed for the opera house. The follow-up to Stick Figure Neighbourhood, it glides on Rob Preuss's shimmering synthesizers and the crisp, clipped pulse of drummer Derrick Ross, with melodies that reach for grandeur while keeping the feet moving. Even the sleeve aims high: the cover photograph was taken at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.

"Nova Heart" and the title track were the singles, and both were big successes; in 1983 the Junos nominated Spoons for Most Promising Group of the Year. The record didn't reach CD until 2000, and a 30th Anniversary Edition in 2012 tacked on live tracks, most of them caught at Barrymore's in Ottawa on October 26, 1982. Next came Talkback.
