The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You, Neko Case's sixth studio album, came out on Anti- on September 3, 2013, a mouthful of a title for the follow-up to Middle Cyclone. Case, who also sings in the New Pornographers, has the kind of voice critics have likened to a flamethrower, and here she turns it on songs that wander between country, folk, indie rock and pop without ever settling down in one of them.
Her words are as oblique and picture-heavy as ever, and the record rewards close listening. "Man" and "Night Still Comes" are the songs that reached the countdowns, and the 56th Grammys nominated the album for Best Alternative Music Album. Hell-On came next.
