Serpentine Prison is an album by Matt Berninger, released in 2020. 1 song from it has charted on rock radio countdowns, with 4 countdown appearances in total. The biggest is “One More Second”, on 4 lists with a best position of #37.
Serpentine Prison, the debut solo album from Matt Berninger, frontman and lyricist of The National, arrived on October 16, 2020, with an unexpected partner behind the desk: Booker T. Jones produced it, and the two even launched a label for it, Book Records, a new imprint of Concord. Out on his own, Berninger's baritone sits right up front, warm and rumpled, the sound of a man talking himself through a long night.
He had stepped outside the band once before, with Brent Knopf in EL VY, and the title track surfaced in May 2020 as the first taste. Even the packaging got noticed: Dale Doyle at Holotype designed and art-directed it around paintings by Michael Carson, and it earned a nomination for Best Recording Package at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.
