Get Sunk by Matt Berninger

Get Sunk, released on May 30, 2025, is the second solo album from Matt Berninger, the frontman and lyricist of the National, and his first since Serpentine Prison in 2020. Sean O'Brien, his longtime collaborator, produced it and co-wrote most of the songs, and it came out on Book Records, the Concord imprint Berninger set up with Booker T. Jones.

That baritone is the center of gravity, low and rumpled and confiding, and O'Brien frames it with care, leaving plenty of room for Berninger's mumbled asides and sudden rises. "Bonnet of Pins" is the pick, a slow burn that sounds like a man talking himself through a long night, and it sums up the album's mood of wry, rueful comfort.
