The Navigator by Hurray For The Riff Raff
The Navigator is an album by Hurray For The Riff Raff, released in 2017. 3 songs from it have charted on rock radio countdowns, with 16 countdown appearances in total. The biggest is “Living in the City”, on 11 lists with a best position of #17.
The Navigator, Hurray for the Riff Raff's sixth studio album, came out on ATO on March 10, 2017, and it's the record where Alynda Mariposa Segarra's project steps out of its folk roots. The band started in New Orleans in 2007, but Segarra grew up in the Bronx, and this one heads back to New York: it was recorded in 2016 at Electric Lady Studios in the city and at Panoramic House in West Marin, with Paul Butler of the Bees producing.
It's built as a story, a concept record about gentrification run amok, and the sound has grown bigger and bolder to match, rock with a street-level urgency that the old front-porch folk never needed. Critics were won over. "Hungry Ghost", "Living in the City" and "Rican Beach" all turned up on the countdowns.
