We Are in Love by Harry Connick Jr.

We Are in Love, Harry Connick Jr.'s sixth studio album, came out on Columbia on July 3, 1990, and it's a young man playing it absolutely straight: traditional jazz with a swing in its hips, no rock moves, no apologies. Connick sits at the piano and croons, backed by a tight little outfit of Russell Malone on guitar, Benjamin Jonah Wolfe on double bass and Shannon Powell on drums, with Branford Marsalis blowing sax.

The title track and "Recipe for Love" are smooth and unhurried, the kind of songs built for a slow dance in a dim room. The critics couldn't decide what to make of him, but the public had no such trouble: the album topped the Billboard jazz charts, cracked the UK top ten and sold over two million copies. Not bad for a year in which he was also breaking into movies.
