Gov't Mule, the self-titled debut from the Southern rock jam band, came out on Relativity in 1995, a year after Warren Haynes and Allen Woody, both still in the Allman Brothers Band at the time, teamed up with drummer Matt Abts, whom Haynes knew from the Dickey Betts Band. That's a power trio with nowhere to hide, and they didn't try.

Michael Barbiero produced it at Bearsville and caught most of it live, so the songs bleed into one another like a club set that never stops for breath: Haynes's thick, bluesy guitar up front, Woody's bass rumbling underneath, Abts hammering it all into hard rock. "Mule" is still a concert favorite, and "Rockin' Horse" got a second life when the Allmans recorded it for Hittin' the Note after Haynes rejoined them.
