We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic, the third album from Westlake Village duo Foxygen, arrived on Jagjaguwar on January 22, 2013, and it's a gloriously shameless magpie of a record. Sam France sings like he's channeling a half-dozen vintage rock stars at once, sneering one second and crooning the next, while multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Rado piles on guitars, keyboards and hand-me-down grooves. Richard Swift produced, and he keeps it warm and a little wobbly, like a thrift-store vinyl find played on a cheap turntable.
"Shuggie" went out first, in October 2012, followed by "San Francisco" just before the album dropped, with "No Destruction" coming after in May. It's a record in love with the past and playing dress-up with it, and it's hard not to grin along.
