La vita nuova, the 2020 EP from Christine and the Queens, came out digitally on 27 February 2020 on Because Music, arriving hand in hand with a short film, with CD and vinyl following that May. Rahim Redcar had already won the critics over with Chaleur humaine and Chris, but this one came out of grief, made in reaction to his mother's death, and it plays like a heart running on raw nerves and synth pulse.
"People, I've Been Sad" is the one that stuck, a slow-burning plea that was later named a song of the year, and plenty of critics called the EP his strongest work yet. The title track brings Italian lyrics back into his songs for the first time since "Science Fiction" on his debut album, and the short film earned him his first nomination, for Video of the Year at the 2021 Libera Awards.
