Evolver, 311's seventh album, came out on Volcano on July 22, 2003, and it was the second record the Omaha band made at The Hive, their own studio in North Hollywood, with Ron Saint Germain producing. The lineup is the one that settled in when SA Martinez joined in 1992 as second vocalist and turntablist: Nick Hexum singing and playing guitar, Tim Mahoney on lead guitar, P-Nut on bass and Chad Sexton on drums.

It's the classic 311 blend, sunny reggae sway, chunky rap-rock riffs and two voices trading lines, played by a rhythm section that never stops bouncing. "Creatures (For a While)" is the breezy, sing-along track radio took to, while "Beyond The Gray Sky" leans darker. It debuted at number 7 on the Billboard 200 with 87,000 copies sold in its first week, and the enhanced CD carried a short film on the making of the cover art. From Chaos came before it; Greatest Hits '93–'03 followed.
