"Althea" sits third on Go to Heaven, the Grateful Dead's 1980 studio album, and it's one of only two songs there from the Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter team, "Alabama Getaway" being the other. Garcia wrote the music and Hunter the words, and Gary Lyons produced, with Betty Cantor-Jackson among the engineers.

The band had already road-tested it, debuting it at the Oakland Civic Auditorium on August 4, 1979, and it never fell out of the repertoire: the Dead played it more than 270 times, the last on July 8, 1995, at Soldier Field in Chicago, the second-to-last show they ever gave. Offshoots including Dead & Company, RatDog and Phil Lesh and Friends have kept it in their sets too.
