"Up on the Roof" was a Gerry Goffin and Carole King song that the Drifters cut in 1962 for Atlantic, with Jerry Leiber producing, and by early 1963 it was a major hit, No. 5 on the US pop chart and No. 4 on the R&B side. King came up with the tune while out driving and nudged Goffin to put words to it, even pitching "My Secret Place" as a title.
Goffin kept her idea of a hideaway but bent it toward his enthusiasm for the movie musical West Side Story, with its scenes up on Upper West Side tenement rooftops, so the refuge ended up above the street. He later named it his favorite of all the lyrics he ever wrote. The Drifters followed it with "On Broadway".
