"Beautiful Ones" was the second single from Coming Up, Suede's third album, released through Nude on 14 October 1996 with Ed Buller producing. Brett Anderson wrote it with Richard Oakes, and it's built on one of the first riffs the new guitarist brought to the band. Its working title was "Dead Leg", after bassist Mat Osman joked that Oakes would get one if he couldn't come up with a top-ten single.
He came up with it: the song reached number eight in Britain, at a time when pop, indie and dance records were all jostling for the same top 10, and topped the chart in Iceland for two weeks. It's Britpop at its sauciest, and Billboard's Larry Flick likened it to an Oasis song run through a mangle at speed.
