"Formidable" followed "Papaoutai" as the second single from Racine carrée, the Belgian singer Stromae's second album, going out as a download in Belgium on June 4, 2013. It's the tale of a drunk man freshly split from his girlfriend, set to an electro-house and hip-hop pulse, with Stromae writing, singing and producing, and Lionel Capouillez sharing the arranging and handling the mix.
The rollout was pure theater. In May 2013, amateur clips of a seemingly drunk Stromae wandering the Louise tram and metro station in Brussels at daybreak surfaced on YouTube and went viral; days later it emerged that the cameras had been rolling for the video, as he confirmed on France 2's Ce soir (ou jamais!). The song entered the Belgian chart at number one, topped the French chart too, and became his biggest earner since "Alors on Danse" in 2009.
