Smokey Robinson wrote "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" in a New York hotel room in 1962, in town on Motown business, after hearing Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home to Me" on the charts and letting it seep into his own pen. The Miracles cut it at Motown's Studio A that October, with Robinson producing and singing lead, Bobby Rogers, the group's second tenor, twining around him as harmony co-lead, and Eddie Willis and Marv Tarplin splitting the guitar parts.
Tamla put it out that November as the B-side of "Happy Landing", and the B-side became a top 10 hit and a million-seller, later gathered onto The Fabulous Miracles. In 1998 it received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame counts it among its 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
