"Comeback Kid" comes from Remind Me Tomorrow, Sharon Van Etten's fifth album, released on Jagjaguwar in January 2019 and her first since Are We There in 2014. She wrote the words and built the music with Sam Cohen during a crowded stretch of her life: pregnant with her first child, working toward a psychology degree and landing a role in Netflix's The OA.
John Congleton produced, recorded and mixed it and packs it with drum machine, organ, sampler, synthesizer, theremin and voice synthesizer. McKenzie Smith plays drums, Zachary Dawes electric bass, Lars Horntveth guitar, woodwind and celesta, Luke Reynolds lap steel and keyboards, and Heather Woods Broderick sings backup while Van Etten adds piano and synth. The album drew wide acclaim, with Pitchfork's Laura Snapes calling it the peak of her songwriting.
