"Us" is track five on Soviet Kitsch, Regina Spektor's major-label debut, and it's the one where her usual piano and voice make room for a string quartet. The 4X4 Quartet plays the strings, Spektor handles piano and vocals, and she produced it with Alan Bezozi and Gordon Raphael. It got a second wind in 2006 as a single for her UK compilation Mary Ann Meets the Gravediggers and Other Short Stories, and by 2009 it had sold 86,000 copies in the US.
It was also the first Spektor song to get a video: a stop-motion short by Adria Petty in which she unpacks a whole room from a trunk, a piano, a rug, a globe and seeds she waters until they grow, then packs everything back, herself included. It's a spoof of Georges Méliès's 1909 silent The Diabolic Tenant.
