"U.S. Forces" comes from Midnight Oil's fourth album, the 1982 Columbia Records release whose title counts down from 10 to 1. Peter Garrett and Jim Moginie wrote it, and Nick Launay produced it with the band, engineering and mixing the track himself.
The album was the band's first release in America, and at home it dug in for the long haul, climbing to number 3 on the Kent Music Report and logging 171 weeks on the chart. Its reputation has held ever since: Triple J's all-time countdown of Australian albums ranked it 21st in 2011, and Rolling Stone Australia ranked it 19th among the 200 greatest albums of all time in 2021.
