Paul Draper wrote "Wide Open Space" by himself, words and music, and Mansun, the rock band out of Chester, first put it out on 25 November 1996 as the lead track of their Four EP before it took its place on Attack of the Grey Lantern. Ian Caple and Mike Hunter recorded it and Mark “Spike” Stent mixed it.
The single's success kept it coming back: reworked versions turned up on four of the band's next five singles: a live take, an acoustic one and a pair of remixes, the Perfecto mix being the first and best loved, the other an NRG makeover by The Trouser Enthusiasts. Hunter, their longtime engineer, later got his name on an entirely different version hidden as a bonus track on the Kleptomania compilation, and the song even turned up on The Sound of Gran Turismo.
