Lucinda Williams wrote "You Can't Rule Me" with Tom Overby for Good Souls Better Angels, her 14th studio album, which came out on April 24, 2020, through Highway 20 Records and Thirty Tigers. The title reads like a dare, and the lineup is lean enough to back it up: Williams on vocals and both acoustic and electric guitar, Stuart Mathis on guitar and violin, David Sutton on bass and Butch on drums and percussion.
She arranged it herself and produced it with Overby and Ray Kennedy, who handled the mix. The album around it drew wide critical praise and a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album, and its advance track, "Man Without a Soul", a swipe at Donald Trump, earned her another nod for Best American Roots Song.
